Deleting Your Account
If you want to permanently delete your Masquerading account, you can do this directly inside the app. This article explains how to delete your account, how to download your data first, and what happens to your information.
Your Right to Erasure
Under GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), you have the right to erasure of your personal data. This means you can request that Masquerading delete your account and associated personal data.
However, some data may be retained where necessary for:
- Compliance with legal obligations
- Establishment, exercise, or defence of legal claims
- Protection of vital interests of you or another person
How to Delete Your Account (In-App)
To permanently delete your Masquerading account:
- Open the app and click the cog (Account Settings)
- Open the Danger Zone section
- Click Delete account
- Type your email address to confirm
- (Optional) Tick Download my data before deleting if you want an export
- Click Delete Account Forever

Before You Delete Your Account
Important: Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. Before requesting deletion:
1. Cancel Your Subscription (If Active)
- If you have an active subscription, cancel it first through the Stripe Customer Portal
- Deleting your account does not automatically cancel billing
- Ensure no future payments are scheduled
2. Download Your Data
- Go to Behind the Mask (your account settings) when logged in
- Click "Download Your Information" to export your data
- Or, when deleting your account, tick "Download my data before deleting" (recommended)
- Save any characters, posts, or content you want to keep
- Screenshot or save important conversations
3. Understand What Will Be Deleted
Once your account is deleted:
- Account: Your user account will be permanently removed
- Characters: All characters you created will be deleted
- Content: Your posts, messages, and other content will be removed
- Subscription: Your subscription data will be deleted (after final billing is resolved)
- Dating profile: Your Masquerading Dating profile and connections will be removed
Data Retention After Deletion
After account deletion, Masquerading will:
- Delete your personal data: Name, email, profile information, and characters
- Anonymize or delete content: Your posts and messages will be removed or anonymized
- Retain some data for legal purposes: Transaction records, logs, and certain data may be retained where required by law or for legal claims
- Comply with data protection laws: All retention complies with GDPR and UK data protection legislation

Account Deletion Timing
- Immediate: Deletion happens when you confirm it in the app
- Sign-in access: You lose access right away
- Content removal: Some cleanup/anonymisation steps can take a short time to propagate
Alternative: Temporarily Deactivate
Not ready for permanent deletion? Consider these alternatives:
- Cancel subscription (recommended for a break): Keep your account, stop paying, and drop to events-only access after your billing period ends
- Stop using the app: Your account remains inactive until you return
- Remove characters: Delete specific characters but keep your account
With a cancelled subscription, your account and data remain available, and you can resubscribe anytime.
Important: If you only need a temporary break, do not delete your account. Account deletion is permanent and removes your characters, chats, and account history.
Can I Recover My Account After Deletion?
No. Account deletion is permanent and irreversible. Once deleted:
- Your account cannot be recovered
- Your characters cannot be restored
- Your content cannot be retrieved
- You'll need to create a new account if you return
