Starting a Direct Monologue Conversation

Starting a Direct Monologue (DM) lets you message someone privately, out-of-character (as yourself). On Masquerading, the most common way to start a DM is directly from a lanyard card.

Fastest way: Start a DM from a Lanyard Card

  1. Find a character in Masquerading As... (Character Browser) or Masquerading Dating
  2. Open their lanyard card
  3. Flip the lanyard to see who’s behind the mask
  4. Tap Connect with [Name] to send a DM request
  5. Once the other person accepts, your Direct Monologue conversation opens

Other ways to find someone to message

You can also find people to message through:

  • Character Browser: Browse characters and open their lanyard cards
  • Green Rooms: Click on a character in a Green Room
  • Events: View event attendees
  • The Arena: Click on characters in posts

What happens next?

Direct Monologue begins as a request. The other person can accept or decline. If they decline, the DM won’t open.

Send your first message

Type your message and send it. Remember:

  • This is out-of-character—you're messaging as yourself
  • The other person will see your real identity
  • Keep it respectful and appropriate

Requirements

Both you and the person you're messaging need:

  • Active subscriptions (Guest Pass, Monthly, or Annual)
  • Accounts in good standing

Privacy Settings

Some users may have privacy settings that:

  • Restrict who can message them
  • Require approval before messaging

If you can't message someone, they may have these restrictions enabled.

Best Practices

  • Be respectful: Remember, you're messaging as yourself
  • Introduce yourself: Let them know who you are
  • Keep it appropriate: Follow community guidelines
  • Respect boundaries: If someone doesn't respond, don't spam messages
