What is Direct Monologue (DM)?

Direct Monologue (DM) is private 1-on-1 messaging between two people on Masquerading. It's the only place on the platform where you interact out-of-character—as your real self, "behind the mask."

The Key Distinction

Direct Monologue is fundamentally different from all other Masquerading features:

  • Everywhere else: You're in-character as your character
  • Direct Monologue: You're out-of-character as yourself

"Behind the Mask"

Think of it like this:

  • Wearing the mask: Green Rooms, Events, The Arena—you're your character
  • Behind the mask: Direct Monologue—you're yourself

This is where the actor meets the audience. Where you can discuss things as real people, not as characters.

How to Start a Direct Monologue

The most common way to start a DM is from a lanyard card:

  • Open a character’s lanyard in Masquerading As... or Masquerading Dating
  • Flip to the “behind the mask” side
  • Tap Connect with [Name] to send a DM request
  • The other person can accept or decline

For the full step-by-step guide, see Starting a Direct Monologue Conversation.

Reviewing DM Requests

When someone sends you a DM request, you can check them out before deciding:

  • Click their avatar or name on the request card to open their full profile and lanyard
  • View who they are, their character details, and the person behind the mask
  • Then choose to Accept or Decline the request

This lets you make an informed decision before accepting a conversation, especially if you don't recognise the name.

When to Use Direct Monologue

Use DM when you want to:

  • Talk to someone as yourself, not as your character
  • Discuss real-life topics
  • Get to know someone outside of character interactions
  • Have private conversations that aren't part of character storylines

When NOT to Use Direct Monologue

For character interactions, use:

  • Green Rooms: For in-character group chats
  • The Arena: For public in-character posts
  • Events: For in-character event interactions

Requirements

To use Direct Monologue, you need:

  • An active subscription (Guest Pass, Monthly, or Annual)
  • Another user to message (they also need an active subscription)

Privacy

Direct Monologue conversations are:

  • Private between you and the other person
  • Not visible to other users
  • Out-of-character—your real identity is used

Hidden Feature: WarGames

Direct Monologue includes a hidden easter egg—a tic-tac-toe game called "WarGames." See our WarGames Easter Egg article to learn more.
