Code of Conduct

Masquerading's Code of Conduct outlines expected behavior in THE Social Fiction Community. All users must follow these guidelines and comply with our Terms & Conditions.

Core Principles

All content and interactions on Masquerading must be:

• Appropriate, civil, and tasteful
• In accordance with generally accepted standards of etiquette and behavior
• Respectful of others and the community
• Compliant with UK law and our Terms & Conditions

In-Character Guidelines

Masquerading is Social Fiction—a safe space for everyone to "BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE." While many spaces encourage in-character interactions, Masquerading does not enforce staying in character:

• Green Rooms: If you create your own Green Room, you can use it however you like—including as a group chat. Respect the room owner's preferences in their space.
• Public spaces: Many users enjoy staying in-character in The Arena and Events, but it's not required
• Respect others: Whether in-character or out-of-character, treat everyone with respect
• Use Direct Monologue (DM) for private out-of-character discussions
• Consent matters—respect boundaries regardless of whether interactions are in-character or not

Prohibited Content and Behavior

The following are strictly prohibited on Masquerading:

Harmful or Illegal Content

• Anything unlawful, illegal, fraudulent, or harmful
• Incitement to crime or promotion of criminal activity
• Malware, viruses, or malicious software
• Spam or unsolicited advertising

Offensive or Abusive Content

• Harassment, abuse, or threats of any kind
• Hate speech: Racial or religious hatred, discrimination, or inflammatory content
• Harassment: Offensive, threatening, menacing, or anti-social behavior
• Content that causes annoyance, inconvenience, or needless anxiety

Inappropriate Sexual or Violent Content

• Pornographic, lewd, suggestive, or sexually explicit content
• Obscene or indecent material
• Explicit, graphic, or gratuitous depictions of violence

Deceptive or Harmful Content

• False, inaccurate, or misleading information
• Libellous or maliciously false statements
• Impersonation of others (including staff, moderators, or other users)
• Fraudulent or deceptive activity

Intellectual Property Violations

• Copyright infringement
• Trademark violations
• Unauthorized use of others' intellectual property

Respectful Interactions

When interacting with others:

• Treat everyone with respect, whether in-character or out-of-character
• Be kind and considerate in all communications
• Respect boundaries—don't force unwanted interactions
• Respect different perspectives and creative choices
• Keep it civil—disagreements are okay, but remain respectful

Reporting Violations

If you encounter content or behavior that violates this Code of Conduct:

• Prefer the in-app support ticket (open the app, click the cog, then Share Feedback)
• Use the Contact Form to report violations
• Provide details about the violation (what, where, when)
• Include screenshots or evidence if possible
• All reports are reviewed by Masquerading staff

Consequences for Violations

Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in:

• Formal warning for first-time or minor violations
• Temporary suspension of account access
• Permanent ban from the platform
• Content removal without notice
• Legal action for serious violations

The severity of the consequence depends on the nature and frequency of the violation. Masquerading reserves the right to take action at our sole discretion.
