The Fourth Wall: Character vs Person on Masquerading

The fourth wall is the line between performance and real life. On Masquerading, most of the platform is character-first — you show up as your active persona. There is one dedicated place to step behind the mask and talk as yourself.

Wearing the Mask (In-Character)

These spaces lead with your character, costume, or chosen persona:

  • Green Rooms — group chat in character (public or private)
  • The Call Board & The Stage — posts and reactions as your active character
  • Events — RSVP and event chatter as who you are playing
  • Masquerading As — discover people through their Lanyards
  • Masquerading Dating — meet the character side first; flip the Lanyard when ready

Tap any avatar in chat to open their Lanyard — character on the front, person on the back when they choose to share it.

Behind the Mask (Out-of-Character)

Direct Monologue (DM) is the one feature where Masquerading encourages you to be yourself — the person behind the mask. It is person-to-person by default.

  • Start a DM from any Lanyard when you want a private 1-on-1 conversation
  • Use DMs to coordinate plans, check consent, or get to know someone without performing
  • You can still chat in character in DMs if you both agree — but that is optional, not required

When to Break the Fourth Wall

Good reasons to move to Direct Monologue:

  • Checking comfort levels before deeper roleplay
  • Discussing real-world meetups or safety
  • Clarifying misunderstandings out of character
  • Building trust before flipping a Dating Lanyard

In Green Rooms, read the room — some rooms stay strictly in character; others allow occasional OOC notes in parentheses. When unsure, ask in DM.

Why the Split Exists

Social Fiction needs both immersion and safety. Character-first spaces keep the magic; Direct Monologue keeps humans connected as humans. That balance is what makes Masquerading different from a flat real-name feed — or from platforms that force performance everywhere.
